A Voice in the Wilderness spoke. “You’re like a spiritual busybody, aren’t you?”
I struggled toward consciousness and tried to examined the motives for what I do. “Yeah, you may be right.”
God narrowed to that glowing tunnel dying people sometimes report and exclaimed, “Look at me! I am Light.”
“No one really understands that,” I grumbled.
“What??? Photosynthesis? Isn’t that in the seventh-grade curriculum anymore?”
I rolled over and covered my head with my flannel sheet. “Why are you so invasive this morning?”
“Not invasive. . . lonely.” The Voice faltered.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” I said. And I meant it. The Loneliness of God began seeping into my chest. Eternity can be a cold, desolate place.
“Here. How about you lie down and rest?” I asked, patting the warm space beside me. “It’s only Tuesday.”
God sighed, nestled in, and filled the room with the scent of jasmine.
“Nice,” I whispered. “Jasmine reminds me of our trip to Tunisia. And remember Belize?”
God didn’t respond. He was snoring.
I shaped my body to this exhausted fraction of the Universe and let myself slide back to sleep among the Multiplicities and Contradictories of God, the Matriarch faithfully circling the herd.
God snorted and roused himself. “You awake?” he asked groggily.
“I have no idea,” I responded. “You?”
“I’m not sure either. It’s been a hell of a week. Just when I think it can’t get worse, I find more hatefulness to eat.”
I was staring at my phone. “Um…hold that thought. I need to finish this puzzle.”
“The word is BINGO.”
I slugged God. “No wonder you have no friends.”
God grinned. “I can’t help it. I’m like a motor that won’t shut off. Omniscience can ruin things.”
I laughed. The Identities of God are often stolen and used as excuses for self-indulgence or manipulated for ill-gotten gains. The mark of the True is Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Honesty, Gentleness, and Self-control. Against these, nothing ultimately prevails.
The Essence of the Sacred is grist for the mill. We’re nourished by indiscriminate harvests. Rain falls on saints and vipers, the just and unjust, the living and the dead. The end is the beginning. The beginning is the end.
Rested and ready to face another day, we arose and made breakfast.
“You don’t need to be a spiritual busybody for my sake,” God said.
“It’s not for you. If I don’t keep blasting away, I’ll go crazy.”
God chuckled. “Yahoo! So true! I’m right there with you, babe.”
“Sometimes, I wish you weren’t,” I sighed. “You can be a real pain.”
“I know that.” God winked. “Like I said, omniscience sometimes ruins things.”
